Salou. Costa Dorada. 19 July 2019. This summer is the second consecutive that the City of Salou launches a canine unit of the Local Police, which aims to improve public safety in the summer, as it is used primarily to detect narcotic substances on public roads. The unit has a dog properly trained for this task and 3 body agents who have received specialized training to work with the dog.

During the presentation of the unit, the mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, explained that "Salou has the best security in the whole province" if you take into account the population that is in summer. The mayor added that "the canine unit of the Local Police of Salou becomes a reference in the territory and brings added value to the work of our agents, especially because the goal is to search for drugs and avoid trafficking and, in this sense, it is a matter of order, civility and security, but it is also a public health issue. "

For his part, the head of the Local Police of Salou, José Luis Gargallo, explained that last year the canine unit made more than 200 interventions in the summer related to hashish and cocaine.

The police dog of Salou is trained by a specialized company and has the necessary qualities to be trained as a guardian, animal defense and service. It is a breed (Belgian Shepherd Malinois) highly appreciated by the police force for its effectiveness, skills and willingness to work. When the animal detects a narcotic substance with its sense of smell, it adopts a passive attitude and sits at the feet of the subject until the police identifies it and proceeds to registration.

The canine patrol, however, does not always act according to the same routines or schedules, nor in the same area but within the same perimeter. In addition, dogs can locate substances in community mailboxes, in gardens or even in litter bins.

The Councilor for Security and Mobility, Júlia Gómez, has said that "the police canine unit ensures that the municipality is safer and that public order is maintained at all levels. We are very proud of its operation and we value its professionalism and your mission. "
