Salou, municipality with LGBTI pride
Salou. Costa Dorada. 28 June 2024. Salou is a municipality committed to equality and against discrimination of all kinds, and for this reason it has also joined in 2024 the commemoration of International LGBTI Pride Day, which is celebrated on June 28, with various events. to make this group visible and to raise awareness against the stigma it suffers.
One of the events has been the raising of the LGBTI flag in the nerve center of Salou, Passeig Jaume I, with the participation of the mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, the councilor for Equality, Julia Gómez, as well as other members of the corporation municipal. During the event, the role of the Servei Integral d'Atenció (SAI) for the LGTBI community was praised and the institutional Manifest was read by the president of the Diversity Salou Association, José Maria Gómez.
To give more visibility to the municipal commitment to the LGBTI cause, the stairs on Brussel·les Street have also been painted with the colors that represent the group, and the street furniture decoration on Barbastre and Colom streets has been reviewed.
LGBTI pride week
In addition to this event, awareness-raising activities were held during the week focused on two round tables in the days leading up to June 28: one on hate crimes against the LGBTI community and another on responsible and inclusive journalism.
The first round table had the participation of Judge Diego Álvarez de Juan, prosecutor Ana Farrero, the president of the Gaylespol police union, Manuel Peinado, and the director of the Mas d'Enric penitentiary center, Carlos López. The head of the Cambrils Local Police, Raquel López, moderated the round table. During the debate, the difficulty of hate crimes being translated into convictions in the current legal framework was highlighted, in addition to highlighting the resistance that still exists to accept and integrate sexual and gender diversity among various professional sectors.
The round table on responsible and inclusive journalism included the participation of journalists Norián Muñoz from Diari de Tarragona, Carles Magrané, director of Diari Més, Cristina Artacho from Ràdio Ciutat de Tarragona and Joan Ballart from TAC 12, while journalist Àlex Riba acted as moderator and Óscar Molero read a poem about hate crimes written by him for the occasion.
In this round table there have been coincidences about the lack of information and training of journalists about the LGBTI community and their struggle, beyond commemorative days such as Pride. The role of social networks, in contrast to social media, in spreading false news and the use of offensive and discriminatory language has also been highlighted.
