Route of Modernism Reus: the Nava House
Reus
In the Plaza del Mercadal in Reus, a few meters from Gaudí Centre, stands one of the most emblematic modernist buildings in the city of Reus and one of the best examples of Modernism at European level: the Navas House.
Built between 1902 and 1907 by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, a building with a house and a shop for Joaquim Navas was projected. The façade facing the Plaza del Mercadal was crowned with a tower on the corner of Calle Jesus that was destroyed by a bombing during the Spanish Civil War in 1938. Also in that year the windows that completed three arches were lost facade modernist architect opened from the courtyard to be built in the west. The windows of the third façade allow better illuminate the home and provide daylight in the store downstairs.
La Casa Navas preserved almost intact all the beautiful decoration and ornamentation of the building, which is one of the best examples of the decorative arts of European modernism. Also noteworthy is the furniture designed and made by renowned Catalan carpenter Gaspar Homar.
Visit the shop floor, open to the public is recommended, and that preserves the original structure and modernist furniture.
